To make the blog private, you need to go to settings, permissions and choose the option "Allow on these readers" (something of this sort).
To retain your readers, post a post requesting everyone to leave their e-mail ID's with you. Else, you could reveal your e-mail ID and request your readers to e-mail you so that you have their e-mail IDs. And, then send them all an invite.
You should ask Brosreview, he follows my blog- his is private and he still has his followers. Other than that I don't know the answer as to how to do that.

But the drawback is, your followers will not be able to keep track of your posts in the reader [such as google reader]
i have no idea, i have seen some bloggers do it but i don't know how, fractal mom and sugar britches are two that i know but i can't read their blogs any more. sorry you are having problems with people bugging you that really makes the blog world suck at times.

I think you can make your blog by invitation only...it should be all in the settings...
